Bernard Shaw Dies
"He went peacefully at home with his wife of 34 years, sister Joan, and daughters Lydia Hearst and Gillian Hearst-Simonds, along with [her] husband Christian Simonds by his side," a rep told People. "He was loved deeply by his family and adored by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing him. We kindly ask that you respect the privacy of the family during this time."
Hearst, the socialite heiress to the Hearst Corporation – who found herself behind bars after getting convicted of a bank robbery – met Shaw in 1976 in San Francisco while she was out on $1.5 million bail, and while he was a police officer. When Hearst's conviction set her to jail, Shaw dutifully visited his girlfriend four times a week.
After serving two years behind bars, Hearst's sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter, as it was believed Hearst had suffered Stockholm Syndrome at the hands of her Symbionese Liberation Army kidnappers. Hearst and Shaw were enagaged upon her release and were married in 1979.
At the time of his death, Shaw was working as the Hearst Corporations vice president of corporate security. Before he joined the company, Shaw had served as a San Francisco police officer for 15 years.
Shaw is survived by his wife, their two daughters and two children from a previous marriage.
